Community Hospital East Receives Level III Obstetric and Neonatal Care Certification

The Indiana Department of Health has granted Community Hospital East Level III certification in obstetrics and neonatal care. Now, with specialized equipment and a dedicated 24/7 team, mothers and babies who need intensive care can be treated close to home.

What Does “Level III” Mean?

A Level III hospital is equipped to care for mothers with complex pregnancies, newborns who are born premature or at low birth weight, and babies requiring intensive care. Level III NICUs are designed for babies who may need on-going care and a network of specialists.

On the other hand, Level II facilities care for individuals with complications that are expected to resolve quickly, and Level I facilities care for those deemed medically stable or “uncomplicated.”

What Made This Possible

In addition to the specialized equipment in the labs and imaging departments, Community Hospital East built a strong team that provides complex care. In-house providers were key in building this foundation. At Community East, patients have access to NICU respiratory therapists and providers, OB/GYNs, in-house ICU providers and other specialists around the clock.

Alongside the specialists is an experienced staff of nurses that provide bedside care and intensive treatment assistance 24/7.

The dedication and help of each of these members made Level III certification achievable.

What Level III Means for Families

As a Level III Obstetric and Neonatal Hospital, Community Hospital East cares for complex medical needs of mothers and babies. Specialty services are available for mothers with medical conditions that could potentially complicate pregnancy or delivery.

Likewise, newborns who are in need of intensive care or were born prematurely, or at low birth weight, can be cared for.

Studies also show that designating hospitals by their perinatal levels of care results in lower maternal and infant mortality rates - decreasing the likelihood of fatality during an exciting moment in life.

By offering various services in one location, it’s less likely that mothers or infants will need to be transferred to a different hospital in order to receive necessary care.

What Level III Means for the Community

Those who require intensive care need look no further than Community Hospital East. We can serve mothers and families of our community with less concern of separating them from their newborns and reduced likelihood of a transfer if complications arise. Community Hospital North is also designated a Level III.

With two Level III Obstetric and Neonatal facilities at Community Health Network, we are proud to offer patients increased access to exceptional care closer to home.
