Community Health Network receives HeartCaring® 2016 Excellence in Action Award

For release on May 18, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS – Community Health Network has been chosen as the National Winner of the 2016 HeartCaring® Excellence in Action Award in recognition of their outstanding achievements in community service. They received the award during HeartCaring’s 12th Annual National Awards celebration on May 18 in Phoenix.

The Excellence in Action Award is given to hospitals whose innovation and extraordinary commitment to community service goes beyond all expectations. Community Health Network has demonstrated superiority in clinician designations, screenings, patient navigation, quality of educational materials and patient follow-up across the continuum of care.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Indiana, and remains a major public health issue. Even more alarming, heart disease claims more women’s lives in the United States than all forms of cancer combined. Nearly one woman dies every minute in America as a result of heart disease, stroke or other cardiovascular diseases. Unfortunately, there are widespread misconceptions that heart disease is a man’s disease.

Aware of these overwhelming statistics, Community Health Network’s commitment to increase cardiovascular disease screening for women through the “Know Your Numbers” community outreach screening program meets these needs through recognition that screenings positively impact cardiovascular disease mortality rates.

“We are proud of our HeartCaring program and staff for their dedication and passion for saving lives and educating our community on heart health. Our Know Your Numbers free cholesterol and glucose screenings, led by Dena Aleksa, provides valuable heart health information to members of the communities we serve,” said Pam London, vice president of cardiovascular services of Community Health Network.

HeartCaring was created in 2005 by the Spirit Health Group in response to a growing body of research that demonstrates an under-diagnosis of heart disease in women, as well as a lack of understanding about gender differences in symptoms of heart and vascular diseases.

HeartCaring’s momentum is built on more than fifteen years of success in partnering with hospitals to improve community health by focusing on women as the key healthcare consumer and family healthcare decision maker through an innovative and proven program called Spirit of Women. Together, in partnership with more than 100 leading hospitals in the United States, we are raising awareness, improving community health and strengthening targeted hospital financial outcomes.

HeartCaring’s goal is simple: while other campaigns and organizations are doing an effective job of raising awareness, HeartCaring hospitals and associated physician practices inspire action. For more information, visit heartcaring.com.
