What is cardiothoracic surgery?
Cardiothoracic surgery is a surgical specialty that involves treatment of cardiac conditions and diseases of the heart, heart valves and great vessels (aorta and vena cava), as well as any organs in the thorax (chest), such as the lungs and esophagus.
Common cardiothoracic procedures performed at CHVH include coronary artery bypass grafting, complex repair of valvular disease, valve replacement procedures, open and endoscopic repair of thoracic aneurysms, treatment of atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia), and diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of lung disorders.
Meet the cardiothoracic surgeons
Dr. Anoush Jidarian is a thoracic surgeon specializing in minimally-invasive surgeries related to benign and malignant conditions of the thorax and esophagus. She graduated from The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-The New Jersey Medical School in Newark, where she also completed her general surgery internship and residency including an appointment as an administrative chief resident. She completed a second residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in minimally-invasive thoracic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Jidarian is board certified in cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery and holds the MD Anderson Cancer Network® certification. She is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, General Thoracic Surgical Club, and will become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in October 2015.
Dr. Koelsch received his medical degree from Finch University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School. He did his general surgery residency and his fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Loyola University- Foster McGraw Hospital, Maywood, Illinois.
He is board certified in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
Dr. Koelsch performs the following procedures:
- Cardiac and other vascular operations: Carotid endarterectomy, open heart coronary artery bypass graft, heart valve replacement, heart valve repair, maze procedure, thoracic aneurysm repair
- Thoracic operations: Thoracotomy, thorascopy, lobectomy/pneumonectomy, lung biopsies, pleurodesis, bleb resection, mediastinoscopy, resection of mediastinal tumors
Brian P. Priest, MD received his medical degree at New Jersey Medical School. He completed his general surgery residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and a transplant and immunology fellowship at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. In 1994 he completed his residency training in cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH.
He is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Pennsylvania Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. Story received his medical degree from the University of New Mexico, followed by both an internship and residency at the University of Louisville. He further completed a fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Storey is board certified in thoracic cardiovascular surgery and general surgery.
