Cardiothoracic surgery is a surgical specialty that involves treatment of cardiac conditions and diseases of the heart, heart valves and great vessels (aorta and vena cava), as well as any organs in the thorax (chest), such as the lungs and esophagus.
Common cardiothoracic surgical procedures include coronary artery bypass grafting, complex repair of valvular disease, valve replacement procedures, open and endoscopic repair of thoracic aneurysms, treatment of atrial fibrillation (arrhythmia), and diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of lung disorders.
