Primary Care Education

Offered in collaboration with University of Indianapolis and Community Health Network, the RN to BSN Program with a concentration in primary care lets you build on your passion for helping others and take the next step in your nursing career in an affordable and accelerated academic program designed for the active lifestyles of working RNs and endorsed by professional nurses at Community Health Network.

Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to enhance critical thinking and clinical judgment to facilitate the transition into practice and address ambulatory care competencies that include:

  • Differentiating between patient characteristics in acute and ambulatory healthcare settings.
  • Utilizing the conceptual framework of ambulatory care nursing practice to provide safe and effective patient care in various ambulatory settings.
  • Accessing ambulatory care team resources to promote patient health management.
  • Leveraging technology, informatics and interprofessional practice manage healthcare needs in ambulatory care settings.
  • Maximizing the elements of the nursing process to care for patients with chronic illnesses.
  • Analyzing current evidence in healthcare that influences ambulatory care nursing practice.
  • Developing a plan of care that identifies strategies that garner expected outcomes for the ambulatory patient.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the plan of care individualized for the ambulatory care patient.

UIndy's Curriculum Overview

In partnership with Community, UIndy now offers a well-rounded curriculum that helps you gain the confidence and competencies to advance your nursing career with a bachelor of science in nursing with a concentration in primary care.

  • Roles and Standards in Clinical and Professional Practice in Ambulatory Care Settings - This introductory course teaches students to identify ambulatory care team members, characterize ambulatory patients and environments, and identify and discuss legal and ethical concerns specific to ambulatory care nursing.
  • Information Technology and Communication in Ambulatory Care Settings - This course offers foundational knowledge and skills in healthcare technology and informatics that promote computer literacy and healthcare information management in ambulatory settings.
  • Coordination of Care in Ambulatory Care Settings - This hands-on course assists students in applying health promotion and advocacy concepts for various patient populations to coordinate the delivery of care within ambulatory settings.

Program Admission and Requirements

UIndy’s RN to BSN program with a primary care concentration offers working RNs flexibility conducive to the busy lifestyle of a nurse, including online classes and 45 hours of clinical practice that can be completed at Community for those working in a primary care setting. Students may enroll in the primary care elective courses at any time during their program of study. There are no prerequisites other than current enrollment in the RN-BSN program.
